Episode II: The Illustrators Strike Back
Although we continued interviewing patients at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, 2019 brought more interviews with families from across the country and around the world. With our social media presence expanding, parents were connecting to us via Facebook and Instagram, increasing dramatically the number of interviews conducted by phone and video chat. Global artists too began to seek us out, and we added volunteers from Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Australia and more. We also joined new community events like the MDA Muscle Walk, an Adaptive Sports Ohio wheelchair basketball tournament, and the Youth Challenge Superhero Dash. Best of all, our first Superhero Project exhibit – Look at Me: Recognition & Representation in a New Pantheon of Superheroes – premiered at the Art Palace gallery in Glenville.

“My vision: I thought seeing a Black baby with disabilities would give other Black kids the idea that we’re powerful, we’re somebody, we’re special and we are not different. It’s more than I asked for. I cried when I got the full poster in the mail. My artist, Zharia, brought it out.”
